Below are pictures submitted by
crew members of the nine 82 foot Coast Guard cutters and the support staff
of USCG Squadron One Division-13 Cat Lo Vietnam in 1966. Click on one and view some great pictures.
There were eleven men on each cutter and a great support staff that kept the
cutters
running. Go to LIFE ON AN 82 FOOT CUTTER
to see what life was like on one of these 82 foot cutters in Vietnam.
All the 82 foot cutters have been replaced by new 87 foot cutters.
It is a real shame one 82 foot cutter was not save and restored. The
twenty six 82 foot cutters of Squadron One, the men who manned them and the
Support Staff who kept them running wrote a unique and huge
chapter in Coast Guard history.
All 82 foot U.S. Coast Guard Cutters were named
after a point of land somewhere in the USA. The first two hull numbers
of any Coast Guard cutter under 95 feet would designate its
length, example the Point White's hull number on the bow was 82308 meaning
it was 82 feet long.
The Coast Guard has no ships all their vessels are called cutters a
tradition carried over from 1790 when the Revenue Cutter Service was formed
and their vessels were called cutters. In 1915 the Revenue Cutter
Service became today's U.S. Coast Guard. Enjoy the pictures and send
the webmaster any pictures, articles or stories that you have. |
